Writing a Standard Resume

Resume Writing Tips No Comments »

Your resume acts as a marketing tool of selling your accomplishments, skills, work experiences and your personality to the prospective employers. You need to invest proper time and efforts to design a resume that looks appealing in design as well as content.

You can follow the below mentioned guidelines for creating a standard resume.

You will require a computer that has a printer attached if you want to take a printout of your resume. It is a good idea to save your resume either on computer or on a flash drive. You should begin writing your resume by giving your name and contact details at the beginning. Your name should be complete name including your middle initial and ensure that it is bold and forms a first line of your resume. After the name, you should mention your complete contact details including your postal address with street no., city, state, and zip code. You should also provide cell and landline phone number along with area code and your email address.

You should write your career objective next that detail in brief about your career objective and how you can add values to the company. After the objective, you can mention the details of academic qualifications. In case you have graduated, you should state your degree, name of the college or university, location of college, and month/year of your graduation. You can also mention your GPA or percentages obtained. In case you are not graduated, you can write the Education section after the activities section of the resume.

You can write about the honours and awards received along with the date and year of your accomplishment in a separate section of “Achievements.” This is to be followed by the work experience section that details about the work history. Some opined that it should be of single page and others say that two or three page resume is acceptable. One reason for keeping your resume short in one page is that the employers are busy and they do not have time for reading the entire resume. The correct length of a resume is being debated by many career professional. Most common and old fashioned view is that single page resume should only be accepted. However, this is not the case in current scenario where even longer resumes are welcomed.

In fact, there is no hard-and-fast rule regarding the length of the resume. It basically depends on a candidate’s work experience and his achievements during his career. Some of other factors for consideration include career objective, years of experience, accomplishments, position, industry and qualifications. You should consider resume as a marketing tool for selling you and your skills to your employers. It is preferred to keep your resume short and simple so that it should be easily understood and comprehended by the employers. The length of the resume is not specific and it is likely to vary from one candidate to other candidate.

There are many things that you need to include in your resume and the challenge for you is to include the relevant keywords in your resume and make it concise. The usage of proper and effective words in your resume will sell your resume to the prospective employer. The minimum of the length of resume can vary, however the maximum length of resume should not exceed for more than two pages. Those who have long work experience needs to include all their work history along with achievement sin their resume and their resume may be longer. On other hand, fresh graduates with only education qualification to show in their resume should keep their resume in one page.

Resume Objective

Resume Writing Tips No Comments »

A resume objective is basically an influential statement at the beginning of your resume that briefly highlights your objectives that you would like to achieve by working with the organisation. With the large number of resumes being received by the HR for any given job; the resumes are scanned very quickly by the employers before making decisions about reading the resumes further or not. A well written objective can maximize your opportunity for getting short listed for further round of selection process. An objective is simply showing your employer, how and why you are the suitable candidate for the job. Your resume will be considered for further reading if it has a good objective at the top.

The resume objectives are usually included by the entry level applicants and fresh graduates who do not have much work experience to highlight in their resume. It is also used by the students applying for internships or trainee jobs where they intend to tell the employers the values they will bring to their company with little experience. The same is applicable for the people who have only one or two years of work experience. Those aspirants who are likely to make a career shift also include objectives to show the employer how valuable they would be to the organization, in spite of lack of relevant experience. In such cases, the objective of the resume helps the aspirants with added focus.

While writing a resume objective, you should try to make it very precise, and meaningful. You should include the name of the specific vacancy, your skills or strengths related to the applied job and how you match to the needs of the organization. You should avoid the usage of personal pronouns like I, my, mine, etc. You should not list your skills at great length as you have to keep it short and focussed.

Example of resume objective to use for an entry level accounting position:

“Seeking an accounting position where superior analytical and technical skills lead to growth of the organisation and increase in profits.”

Resume Experience Tips

Resume Writing Tips No Comments »

You should invest proper time and efforts to display your professional work experience on your resume. You should follow some basic rules for including your experience on your resume.

Use the Industry Specific language – You should use industry specific terminology for demonstrating your work experience in the relevant field. The commonly used words and phrases related to your specific field give the impression that you understand the job you are applying for. The employer will make out that you are familiar with the job you are applying.

Distinguish between work profile and Accomplishments – You should make efforts in organising your resume so that it looks personalised and customised for a specific job opening. Your resume should stand out in crowd. You should also ensure to clearly distinguish between your work profile and professional accomplishments on your resume. It is a common mistake done by people to list their accomplishments and job tasks in the section of work experience. In this way, your recruiter will not come to know of your accomplishments and you will miss out on opportunity on making impression. Ideally, you should list your accomplishments and job tasks in separate sections under each work experience. You should ensure to label each list with a proper heading so that can be easily distinguished from each other.

Prioritize your listing – While listing your earlier professional achievements and job profile, you should ensure to list them in a particular order with major accomplishments and job-related tasks needs to be mentioned first. It is required as a hiring manager has a limited time for scanning your resume and your resume should be able to grab his or her attention with the highlights of your professional experience. You should include those highlights that you relevant to job you are applying for.

Resume Designs

Resume Writing Tips No Comments »

Once you have written the text of your resume, you need to put it together to make it look aesthetically pleasing. You can make an impression of your employers with your resume design.

You can follow the below mentioned tips for improving your resume design.

(1) Keep it concise – You should make every effort to make your resume look concise and crisp. You should not try to fill your resume with lots of words. Once you have finished writing your resume, you should try to remove all the unnecessary content you wrote. Ideally, your resume should be one page in length.

(2) Keep proper spacing – If you leave some areas of blank space on the page, it will increase the readability of the resume. In fact, leaving blank spaces around important portions of your information like your name and contact information, and others, is the ideal resume design. By properly designing the resume and incorporating the white spaces, you can grab the attention of your employer on specific information which you want to highlight.

(3) Use proper Font –The kind of font used by you for writing your resume reflects your professionalism. You should not use excessive creative designer font. You should use the same font on your cover letter as you have on your resume. The most commonly used font includes Times New Roman or Arial.

(4) Keep proper length of your resume – You should try to fit your resume on one page. Sometimes, you will be tempted to reduce the size of font to fit the text of the resume in one page. You can increase the font sizes of those points which you would like to highlight. However, you should avoid reducing the size of content.

(5) Choose proper Paper – You should select a paper for printing your resume in such a way that it reflects your personality and professional goals.

All the resume builders do not necessarily work in the same manner. You are required to submit your personal and professional information into the blanks and then resume builder creates a resume by using this information. A resume builder actually acts as a helping tool for you to write a better resume and you should not rely on it completely. Once you get the formatted resume created by resume builder, you need to go it carefully and make the appropriate changes wherever required. It is required to give the professional look to your resume and it should not look artificially created.
